Zero flute countersinks are a cross-hole countersink, the cone-shaped cutting tools feature a cutting edge provided by a hole that goes through the side of the cone. The cutting edge is formed from the intersection of the hole and the cone. Commonly referred to as a Weldon style countersink. Zero flute countersinks are best suited for softer materials including aluminum, wood & plastic for countersinking & deburring applications. They are offered in 2 styles:

  • Piloted: Piloted countersinks are recommended for screws from 1/4″ – 1/2″ diameter
  • Pilotless: Pilotless countersinks are recommended for bolt sizes from 0.073″ – 1-15/32″ & screw sizes #4 – #10 diameters

How to Choose the Right Size Countersink Diameter

You will want to choose a countersink that is larger than the bolt size of the hole. Countersink diameter = 1.5 x Bolt Size Hole Diameter.

Example: 1/4″-20 Bolt – Multiple the diameter (.250) x 1.5 = 0.375. You will want to use a 3/8″ countersink.

How to Calculate Countersink RPM Speeds

Countersinking is typically performed at 1/3 of the RPM speed of drilling. You will first want to calculate the speed by using the formula below, then you will want to divide that speed by 3 to get the countersinking speed.

Formula: SFM (surface feet/minute) x 3.82 / Cutter Diameter (decimal equivalent) / 3

Aluminum 200 – 250 (225 (SFM) x 3.82 / .2500) /3 = 1,146 RPM

What is a Jobber Drill?

What Does the Term “Jobber” Mean?

The general definition of the term “jobber” is “a person or company that buys from manufacturers and sells to retailers”, most commonly used in the 1850-1950 period. At that time, manufacturers were mostly producing general purpose “for the trade” drill bits, not using specialized machining applications to make specific lengths or designs like today. These drills, were of medium length and suitable for a wide variety of jobs, coining the term “jobber-length”, reflecting the same concept of terms like “general purpose” and “multipurpose”. Today, jobber drill refers to the length of the drill itself.

What is a Jobber Drill?

Today Jobber Drills are manufactured in a number of different style to tackle a number of different applications. Jobber Drills still remain the most commonly found type of drill bit. A jobber drill bit has a long length compared to its diameter. The length of the flute is between 8-12 or 9-14 times the diameter of the drill, depending on the drill specifications. For example, a 1/2″ diameter jobber drill will be able to drill a 4-1/2″ deep hole because it is 9 times the diameter in length. What is a Flap Disc?

Flap Discs are designed to increase work productivity and reduce overall cost by grinding, blending and finishing in 1 step. Flap Discs are constructed by layering coated abrasive flaps so when a flap wears away, a new flap will be expose with fresh, sharp abrasive grains.

Flap Disc Basics

There are 4 basics components of a flap disc: Backing Shape, Backing Type, Gain Type & Density.

Backing Shape

Type 29 – Conical Shapeflap-conical-300x71

  • Built-in angle for increased contact area
  • Best for use on contoured surfaces and edge work
  • Minimizes workpiece gouging
  • More aggressive stock removal due to higher angle
  • 15°-25° working angle

Type 27 – Flat Shapeflap-flat

  • Best for use on miter joints, corners and edges
  • Best choice for finishing intricate and ornate surfaces
  • Ideal for smooth finishing
  • 0°-15° working angle

Backing Type
