Cutting Wheel Styles Available045CuttingWheels

.045″ Cutting Wheels

United Abrasives .045″ cutting wheels are the best choice for efficient cutting. They should never be used for deburring metal after cutting or grinding. This type of misuse could result in wheel failure resulting in severe injury.

.090″ Cutting Wheels090CuttingWheels

United Abrasives .090″ cutting wheels are designed for cutting and notching metal. Notching is a shearing process during which a metal scrap piece is removed from the outside edge of a metal workpiece prior to welding.

Ultimate Combo™ Wheels

United Abrasives Ultimate Combo™ Wheels are the most UltimateComboCuttingWheelsversatile cutting wheel available. Ultimate Combo™ Wheels have a .095″ thickness. This combination wheel allows operators to cut, notch, debur and light grind without the need to change the wheel.

Configurations of Cutting Wheels Available

There are two basic types of configurations available for cutting wheels.

Type 1 / Type 41 Cutting WheelsCuttingWheelTypes

This is a flat cutting wheel that allows for a maximum depth of cut.

Type 27 / Type 42 Cutting Wheels

Originally developed and patented by United Abrasives, this configuration of cutting wheel features more of a rigid feel while cutting, enhanced operator visibility of the cut and the ability to flush cut as the raised hub allows for the locking nut to be recessed. These wheels are also available with a 5/8″-11 quick change hub for ease of mounting.

Grain Types Available for Cutting Wheels

Aluminum Oxide Grain

Aluminum Oxide grain cutting wheels are the most common grain type for cutting wheels. These wheels deliver very good cut rates and durability. They tend to have a lower initial cost for the user which lends to its popularity.

Zirconium Grain

Zirconium grain cutting wheels feature an extremely durable design. These wheels are used for high performance cutting with long life and feature a low cost-per-cut ratio.

Ceramic Grain

Ceramic grain cutting wheels allow for long life and fast cutting speeds. Ceramics also tend to cut cooler, minimizing discoloration while maximizing product life.

Selecting the Correct Flap Disc Makes All the Differenceflap-disc-group1

Flap Discs are one of the most versatile abrasives on the market today. With the ability to grind, blend and finish all in 1 step, flap discs can greatly increase work productivity and reduce overall cost. To get the most out of your money and the best end product available, selecting the correct high quality flap disc makes all the difference.

In our last blog post, “Understanding & Choosing the Right Flap Disc“, we talked about what components make up a flap disc and gave you a better understanding of the options available for each of these components. Read on to learn why United Abrasives Flap Discs stand above the competition and should be your only choice when selecting a new flap disc.

United Abrasives Flap Discs are Simply Made Better

Specially Designed Backing Plates

United Abrasives Flap Discs are designed with custom engineered fiberglass and plastic backing plates. These specially made backing plates are designed to add extra strength and safety.flap-disc-group2

  • United Abrasives uses more fiberglass in their backing vs. many competitors, making the flap discs among the safest on the market
  • United Abrasives has a specially designed plastic backing made of soft ABS Plastic, designed to be trimmed to expose more abrasives material
  • United Abrasives also features a hard plastic backing designed for high strength and rigidity, promoting ease of use and long-life

Advanced Adhesive System

United Abrasives has developed a specially formulated adhesive system that is designed to effectively secure the abrasive flaps to the backing. This special adhesive system, maximizes performance and safety.

Specialized Coated Material

United Abrasives has developed a specifically designed coated material, manufactured on state-of-the-art production equipment, for all of their flap discs. U.A. chooses from a variety of materials to create a flap disc for each application.

Unique Flap DesignMore-Larger-Flaps

United Abrasives flap discs yield a greater performance and product life when compared to competitor flap discs. This is due to the fact that U.A. flap discs have more and larger flaps than the competition, leading to better performance and a longer abrasive life.

Extensive Quality Control

Throughout the process of production, United Abrasives goes through a number of extensive quality control procedures. This ensures maximum safety and performance for each flap disc U.A. manufactures.

Understanding & Choosing the Right Flap Disc

What is a Flap Disc?

Flap Discs are designed to increase work productivity and reduce overall cost by grinding, blending and finishing in 1 step. Flap Discs are constructed by layering coated abrasive flaps so when a flap wears away, a new flap will be expose with fresh, sharp abrasive grains.

Flap Disc Basics

There are 4 basics components of a flap disc: Backing Shape, Backing Type, Gain Type & Density.

Backing Shape

Type 29 – Conical Shapeflap-conical-300x71

  • Built-in angle for increased contact area
  • Best for use on contoured surfaces and edge work
  • Minimizes workpiece gouging
  • More aggressive stock removal due to higher angle
  • 15°-25° working angle

Type 27 – Flat Shapeflap-flat

  • Best for use on miter joints, corners and edges
  • Best choice for finishing intricate and ornate surfaces
  • Ideal for smooth finishing
  • 0°-15° working angle

Backing Type

Fiberglass Backingfiberglass-backing

  • Backing will wear uniformly with abrasive cloth
  • Will not splinter or smear on the workpiece
  • Lighter, quieter operation

Plastic Backing

  • Non-scratching, high strength backing
  • Resistant to temperature extremes, common chemicals and solvents
  • Some plastic backings are trimmable

Flap Backing: Polyester, Polyester-Cotton or Cotton

  • Polyester
    • Able to withstand extremely high pressure without degrading the flap
    • For extreme stock removal and edge grinding
  • Cotton
    • Used where maximum conformability and soft feel is the goalplastic-backing
    • Must be used under lighter pressure to maximize performance and life
  • Polyester/Cotton Blend
    • The best of both worlds
    • Can withstand high pressure while still maintaining good stock removal and finishing
    • Often used as the starting point for flap disc operations for first time users

Grain Type

Ceramic

  • This allows for a consistent under a wide variety of grinding applications
  • You should consider opting for a ceramic disc when grinding on steel, stainless steel or aluminum
  • Ceramics also tend to grind cooler minimizing discoloration while maximizing product life

Zirconium

  • These discs are used for general steel grinding, stock removal and finishingflap-regular
  • The economical choice when cost is the driving factor

Density

High density flap discs provide the user with approximately 40% more grinding material. This increase in grinding material leads to increased flap-highproductivity and longer life.

Choose Flap Disc Over..

Flap Discs Over Grinding Wheels

  • Faster stock removal and smoother finish
  • Quieter operation and reduced vibration minimizing operator fatigue
  • Cooler cutting, reduced loading and glazingflap-discs
  • Easy to use – reduced gouging and rework

Flap Discs Over Fiber Discs

  • Up to 20 times longer life than a fiber disc
  • No backing pad needed
  • Easier storage – no curling
  • More consistent finish
