Protect Schools, Day Cares, & Playgrounds with Pecora Security Sealants

Protect Students & Young Children

With September right around the corner, there is no better time then when the students are off for summer, to make the necessary repairs to the interior and exterior of the building. Before making these repairs, the use and installation of Security Sealants should be strongly considered. Schools and similar facilities like; day cares and playgrounds, are very prone to idle tampering by students and young children. This idle tampering and vandalism leads to damages to the facilities, which in turn will require costly repairs. Along with the costly repairs, the chance of young children ingesting the extracted material can lead to a number of health related problems. Because of this, Security Grade Sealants are becoming a more viable option to traditional caulks and sealants. These Tamper Resistant and Tamper Proof sealants can significantly extend the life of the building and prevent costly damages and repairs. All of the areas within the reach of students and young children, both interior and exterior, should be properly sealed with security sealants to protect against potential tampering. Pecora DynaPoxy™ EP-1200 & DynaFlex™ SC, both available at Tanner, are great options to secure your schools, day cares, and playgrounds. Shop for Pecora DynaPoxy™ EP-1200 & DynaFlex™ SC here.

Pecora Security Sealants vs Standard Caulking & Sealants

Shore Hardness ScaleMost caulks and sealants can be easily tampered with or are pickable. Pickable meaning, these caulks and sealants can be interfered with to the point of removal. Most of these flexible sealants are usually based on urethane or silicone chemisties and can be pulled away to expose a joint.

Pecora Security Sealants, often referred to as Tamper-Proof or Tamper-Resistant, far exceed the hardness and tensile strength of standard caulks and sealants. This makes it much more difficult for these security sealants to be dug into, cut, or pulled from a joint. A Tamper-Proof  or Tamper-Resistant Security Sealants requires a Shore A hardness of up to 80+ and 50, respectively, this prevents them from easily being extracted from a joint. Typically architectural sealants are designed for durability, weatherproofing, and accommodating expansion joint movement. Pecora DynaPoxy™ EP-1200 is a Tamper-Proof security sealant available at Tanner.

When using Tamper-Proof Sealants, you lose all movement capabilities. But when Tamper Resistance was necessary and not having any movement capabilities was unacceptable, a new class of sealant was needed. Pecora stepped in and came out with this new class of security sealants. The newly formulated sealants can be classified as Tamper-Resistant as opposed to Tamper Proof. These products have limited movement capabilities and can be used in properly designed joints. The sealants will allow for both a moving joint as well as having an acceptable level of tamper resistance. Pecora DynaFlex™ SC is a Tamper-Resistant security sealant available at Tanner.

Seal and Secure with Pecora’s DynaFlex SC and DynaPoxy EP-1200

Pecora DynaFlex SC is a unique one part, non-sag, tamper resistant elastomeric STPU (silyl-terminated polyurethane) joint sealant. It has many of the strengths of other two part security sealants, but with an easy to use application method. No mixing nozzles required here, instead DynaFlex can be installed quickly and easily with standard caulking equipment. DynaFlex can be used to seal any interior joints or openings that require a sealant. Suitable materials include: masonry to masonry, masonry to metal, or metal to metal. It can also be used on polycarbonate sheets for interior security glazing, but will require some priming to do so.

Dynaflex is designed to achieve high tensile and tear strengths, is abrasion resistance, and can achieve an average ultimate hardness of at least 55. Not only that, but it can withstand 25% total joint movement. With its rugged yet flexible attributes this sealant is ideal for institutional and correctional complexes as well as other public buildings and facilities. This sealant will prevent idle tampering and vandalism that could potentially endanger occupants, patients, and other citizens. Come shop for DynaFlex Sealants and Primers here.

DynaPoxy EP-1200 is a rigid, two part, high-solids, high-modulus epoxy resin compound. It is designed to be used along with DynaFlex or as an alternative product. DynaPoxy’s pick-proof properties makes it an ideal sealant for high security areas of prisons and other facilities. It has an outstanding adhesion to similar and dissimilar materials making it applicable for most areas. DynaPoxy’s high compressive strength and non-sag properties also allows it to be used as a structural adhesive for vertical and overhead bonding and grouting, as well as bolt embedment. Security Sealant Applications for Prisons

Vandalism in prisons costs taxpayers in the U.S. millions of dollars per year in maintenance and repair. In prisons and detention centers, safeguards are needed against inmates using construction materials to hurt themselves or others. Sealant has been “picked out” to be used as weapons, to expose joints for hiding contraband and weapons, and even to smoke. All interior joints and seams in areas where residents will be spending time in isolation should be specified with a tamper proof sealant such as Pecora Dynapoxy EP-1200.

Common areas such as day rooms, exercise rooms, and cafeterias where supervision is present should be specified with a tamper resistant sealant such as Pecora Dynaflex SC. Pecora Dynaflex SC is USDA approved for use in food processing and preparation areas although direct contact with food is not recommended.

Exterior applications where residents spend extended periods of time should also be considered for a tamper resistant specification. Exterior applications are designed around tamper and tamper resistant sealants of class 12.5 such as Pecora Dynaflex SC.
