What are Expansion Anchors?

Expansion Anchors can be used to describe the majority of concrete and masonry anchors. Expansion anchors have an expansion mechanism that is designed to compress against the base material. Each style of expansion anchor can have a different expansion mechanism, which can either be a sleeve, slotted shell, slotted stud, or wedge assembly. The expansion mechanisms are actuated by a tapered cone, tapered plug, nail, bolt, or screw depending on the anchor. The compression of the expansion mechanism against the wall of the drilled hole allows the anchor to transfer the load to the base material. Anchors that are expanded by tightening a bolt or nut are considered to be torque controlled anchors.

Calk-In – Machine Bolt Anchors

The Calk-In Anchor from Powers Fasteners is a pre-assembled precision cast calking type machine bolt anchor that can be used in concrete, block, brick, and stone. Calk-In anchors are made up of an antimonial lead alloy calking sleeve and a Zamac alloy internally threaded expanded cone. These anchors are typically used for the installation of windows, screens, shutters, and sliding doors. They are not recommended for use in overhead applications. The Calk-In anchors can accept screws or bolts ranging from #8 screws up to 1/2″ diameters.

Single – Shield Expansion Machine Bolt Anchors

The Single Anchor from Powers Fasteners is a shield expansion machine bolt anchor. They are designed to be used in concrete, block, brick, and stone. The Single anchors are made up of a pre-assembled set of expansion shields and an expander cone formed from zamac alloy. As you tighten the Single anchor, the wedge-shaped cone is drawn into the shields, this compresses them against the base material and securely locks the anchor into place. These anchors are not recommended for overhead applications. The Single anchors accept bolts ranging from 1/4″ to 5/8″ diameters.

Heavy Duty, Vibration Resistant, Self-Locking Sleeve Anchor: The Power-Bolt by Powers Fasteners

The Power-Bolt by Powers Fasteners is a heavy duty, vibration resistant, self-locking sleeve anchor. The Power-Bolt is available in two different head styles: a finished hex head or flat head with a hex key insert. These anchors are made out of Zinc Plated Carbon Steel (Finished Hex Head and Flat Head) and also Type 304 Stainless Steel (Finished Hex Head). The internal bolt of the Power-Bolt is removable and reusable in the same anchor sleeve. This makes it suitable for applications such as mounting machinery which may need to be removed for service and for temporary applications such as heavy duty form work.

The Power-Bolt is designed to have expansion occur at two locations within the drilled hole for maximum hold. At first the cone is pulled into the large triple-tined expansion sleeve, developing a mid-level compression force. Further tightening causes the threaded bolt to advance into the threads of the expander cone, forcing its four sections outwards. The expander cone engages the base material deep inside the anchor hole, greatly increasing the holding power of the Power-Bolt. The bolt and cone remain locked together which prevents loosening under vibratory conditions. Along with the expansion inside the anchor hole, the Power-Bolt is designed to draw the fixture into full bearing against the base material through the action of its flexible compression ring. The compression ring with crush if necessary, while the anchor is being tightened, to tightly secure the fixture against the face of the base material.

The Tapper Concrete Screw Anchors are designed for light to medium duty applications in concrete, masonry block, and brick base materials. The Tapper Concrete Screw Anchors are easily installed with matched tolerance drill bits and installation tools. These drill bits and installation tools are designed for optimum performance, and provide the user with a fast and easy installation process. There are a number of different head styles, colors, and finishes to choose from of which all provide a neat finished appearance. The Tapper Concrete Screw Anchors are available in: 410 and 304 stainless steel with a Hex Head or Phillips Flat Head.
