3M™ DBI-SALA® Making Fall Protection for Tools Even Safer

The New ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 Dropped Objects Protection Standard

Safe. Secure. Standard.

On July 2nd 2018, the American National Standards Association (ANSI) approved the NEW ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 standard for Dropped Objects Protection. With this new standard and the help of 3M™ DBI-SALA®’s Fall Protection for Tools Solutions, we hope we can change these negative statistics.

Smart Lock Self-Retracting LifelinesSmart-lock-srl-boxes

While working at heights, the last thing you want your self-retracting lifeline to do is to suddenly lock up unexpectedly. These unintentional lockups can cause delays and may even create a potential safety hazard. Luckily, 3M™ DBI-SALA® has developed the Smart Lock Self-Retracting Lifelines. Reduce unintentional lockups and simplify inspections with 3M™ DBI-SALA® Smart Lock Self-Retracting Lifelines, designed to help increase your productivity and convenience.

The Smartest SRLs Yet

To develop the Smart Lock SRL product line, 3M used advanced motion capture technology to study the way users work, move and interact while wearing a SRL on the jobsite. This data helped engineer an arrest mechanism that is designed to better accommodate the users natural work motions – resulting in fewer unintentional lockups*.

New ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 Dropped Objects Standard Published

Cause of Fatal Work InjuriesGet Informed & Save Lives

For years now the leading causes of death on construction jobsites has been “Fall” & ” Stuck by Object” cases, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). With more than 50,000 “struck by falling object” OSHA recordable incidents every year, that calculates out to 1 injury caused by a dropped object every 10 minutes.

What is Addressed in this New Standard?Workers Struck By Objects

This standard establishes minimum design, performance, testing and labeling requirements for equipment solutions that reduce dropped objects incidents in industrial and occupation settings. Dropped objects include hand tools, instrumentation, small parts, structural components and other items that need to be transferred and used at heights.

Make the Change Today

It is highly recommended that all objects, whether they are people or tools, be protected from falls. OSHA now requires that if you work in an environment where there is a risk of falling objects, you must do the following:

• Secure tools and materials to prevent them from falling on people below
• Barricade hazard areas and post warning signs
• Use toe boards, screens on guardrails or scaffolds to prevent falling objects
• Use debris nets, catch platforms or canopies to catch or deflect falling objects

It is Your Responsibility

It is the responsibility of every safety manager, construction superintendent, overseer & worker to make sure they understand the dangers they face when working at-height. Fall prevention means preventing things from falling, whether they are people, tools or equipment. Having the proper knowledge and correct equipment will go a long way in keeping you and your fellow workers safe.PDF-box

National Fall Prevention Stand-Down

The purpose of the National Fall Prevention Stand-Down is to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in construction. Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 269 of the 775 construction fatalities recorded in 2012. Those deaths were preventable. Fall prevention safety standards were among the top 10 most frequently cited OSHA standards, during fiscal year 2012.

Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a toolbox talk or another safety activity such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards. Managers are encouraged to plan a stand-down that works best for their workplace anytime during the week of June 2-6, 2014. (OSHA.org)

Fall Safety ABC's

Here at Tanner we want to make sure you can provide all the correct Fall Safety Equipment to your workers.  A typical Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) incorporates three components often described as the ABC’s of fall protection. The anchorage/anchorage connector, body support and connecting device, when used together, form a complete system for maximum worker protection. But don’t forget about another required component of any fall protection program — the descent, rescue and retrieval of a fallen worker.

ANCHORS:
Anchors are a secure point of attachment. Anchorage connectors vary by industry, job, type of installation and structure. They must be able to support the intended loads and provide a sufficient factor of safety.

BODY SUPPORT:
Body support is typically a full body harness. Harnesses distribute fall forces over the upper thighs, pelvis, chest and shoulders. They provide a connection point on the worker for the personal fall arrest system.

CONNECTORS:
Connectors such as shock absorbing lanyards or self retracting lifelines connect a worker’s harness to the anchorage.

DESCENT & RESCUE:
These are devices used to raise or lower a fallen injured worker to safety or retrieve him from a confined space.
